Florine Offergelt, scultrice olandese, è nata nel 1963, lo stesso anno in cui il celebre e carismatico leader per i diritti civili Martin Luther King aveva pronunciato il famoso discorso I HAVE A DREAM: il sogno che a tutti gli uomini venissero riconosciuti pari dignità, pari diritti. I valori che il predicatore ha espresso con il suo discorso sono stati di grande ispirazione per l’artista nella creazione di questa opera. Florine molto spesso mette in evidenza i problemi della società; sottolinea l’importanza di una giusta comunicazione per favorire il dialogo ed eliminare la discriminazione in tutte le sue forme, perché la diversità o la disabilità presentano i nostri stessi valori, gli stessi sentimenti, che ci devono unire: le lacrime, le gioie, le emozioni. Il personaggio grottesco di questa statua, esprime un messaggio apparentemente ironico, con mani e piedi enormi, e tuttavia suggerisce quanto sia difficile reggere il peso di un mondo ancora afflitto dalla discriminazione e dalla crudeltà contro cui si era infranto il sogno di Martin Luther King. Questo uomo colorato, pesantemente legato alla Terra, guarda in alto, verso il sole: ogni uomo è diverso ma il sole splende per tutti e illumina gli stessi sogni.
Florine Offergelt, a Dutch sculptor, was born in 1963, the same year in which the famous and charismatic civil rights leader Martin Luther King delivered his iconic speech "I HAVE A DREAM": the dream that all men would be recognized with equal dignity and equal rights. The values expressed by the preacher in his speech have been a great inspiration for the artist in creating this work. Florine often highlights the problems of society; she emphasizes the importance of proper communication to foster dialogue and eliminate discrimination in all its forms, because diversity or disability present the same values, the same feelings that unite us: tears, joys, emotions. The grotesque character of this statue, with its enormous hands and feet, expresses an apparently ironic message, yet suggests how difficult it is to bear the weight of a world still afflicted by discrimination and cruelty against which Martin Luther King's dream had crashed. This colorful man, heavily bound to the earth, looks up towards the sun: every man is different, but the sun shines for all and illuminates the same dreams.
